Don’t Go It Alone

When you are pursuing anything meaningful in your life that requires changing your habits and/or facing challenges along the way, your path to success will be easier, quicker, and more enjoyable if you have the right support.  End of blog post.

Well, it would have been the end, except most people either don’t buy what I just said, or they buy it and never unwrap the package.

In theory, yes, you could do it on your own.  But what’s your timeline?  Is your goal important to you or not?  If it’s important, then you’re gonna need some help.

When you have locked in on your most ambitious goals and your passion for pursuing them makes you want to burst, you then have unavoidable urgency to get started RIGHT AWAY.  That means it’s really important to you.  And when you are that pumped up, you cannot afford to go it alone.  It will take longer and be harder.  It is nearly guaranteed that you will lose motivation and focus before you reach your desired aim.  Unfortunately, as I know painfully well, if you do not have vested support and accountability partnership, at some point you will declare defeat: “What’s the point – even if I do everything I’m supposed to do, it won’t matter…I’ll never get there.”  With support, you absolutely will!

Holding yourself accountable by yourself takes an enormous amount of energy and self-discipline.  Why would you put yourself through that?  There are no hero badges earned for doing everything the hard way.  GET THE EPIDURAL!!

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to wait for years and years to achieve my most ambitious goals.  Yes, some of them will take longer than others, but ALL of them will take longer if I hunker down and only depend on myself.  That’s because I get in my own way, and so do you.  It’s nothing to be ashamed of.  In fact, accountable people are the first to admit that they are in their own way.  They look in the mirror first when searching for the solution to any problem they face.

Do you know any successful person who achieved their goals all on their own?  NO, you don’t.  Even if you think you do, you don’t.

Robin: I’ve gotta save my family! Just think. What would Batman do?

Batman: What?

Robin: I know. Not listen to anyone else.  Be mean to people. Destroy as much property as possible. Talk in a really low, gravelly voice. And go in alone!

The bulk of The LEGO Batman Movie is spent proving how wrong Batman is about trying to do everything himself.  Yes, even Batman needed to learn this lesson.  Part of his lesson was that people really wanted to help him.  It’s not an intrusion.  Rather, it makes people feel good to help others.  That’s one of the reasons you do it, right?  One of the best ways to show respect and admiration for someone is to ask them to share the gift of their talent with you.

Every successful person was and is helped along the way.  The most successful people are resourceful and actively seek out tips, best practices, coaching, and collaboration from others who are willing and eager to assist.

And, let’s not forget: the pursuit of an ambitious goal is an EPIC journey for you.  Do you want to enjoy it or resent it?  Having focused support in the form of resources, community, coaching, and caring is inspiring, effective, and FUN!
