Why You Need to Pursue Ambitious Goals

I have a core hypothesis that is derived from the following assumptions:

  1. Accountable people have a growth mindset.
  2. People with a growth mindset are in continuous pursuit of learning and personal transformation.
  3. Goal setting and execution accelerates personal transformation.
  4. Accountable people are called to serve others.

Steph’s Hypothesis:

People who pursue ambitious goals are more inclined to generously serve others.

As an accountable person, you likely feel obligated to serve when others can’t or won’t.  This means you often delay pursuit of your own goals in favor of meeting the needs of others.  BUT, in reality, the best way to meet the needs of others is to pursue your own ambitious goals.

When you achieve ambitious goals, you have high self-efficacy; you believe you are capable of bigger and better things, of having a greater impact.  With high self-efficacy, you gain the momentum of confidence that generates a continuous cycle of ambitious goal pursuit and achievement.

Achieving ambitious goals results in self-actualization. Self-actualization is the pinnacle of personal need.  When your personal needs are met, you are more motivated to meet the needs of others because you feel you have more capacity and capability to do so.

When pursuit of your ambitious goals results in accomplishments that are born out of integrity and a desire to serve, your intended audience will be rewarded. Succeeding is serving!

But…

If you wait to pursue your goals, they wait for your help.  “They” are the people you choose to serve.

They are worthy of your service.

You are worthy of your service.

Serving you serves them.

If you are picking up what I am putting down, you’ll understand why I created my Facebook group…

  • Accountability Ambassadors serve others by doing whatever it takes to be the best people we can be.
  • Ambitious Accountability Ambassadors (Ambacams) pursue ambitious goals that ignite personal transformation to positively impact the people we serve.

I started the Ambacam Facebook group because this is my mission:

I want to help more people to serve more people.

People are waiting to be served!  Don’t make them wait!

If you are hesitating, my bet is that one or both of these major faulty assumptions are holding you back:

Faulty Assumption #1: I don’t know what I want to do.

While there is no requirement for you to know what you want to do, there IS something you want. Accountable people who embrace servant leadership have a growth mindset and are always seeking ways to improve themselves in order to make a bigger impact on their world and on the world.  The answer lies within you.  However, the answer is not likely to appear spontaneously without you deliberately pondering the possibilities.  Your journey starts here.

You don’t have to start with clarity – you will SEEK clarity.  All you need to get started is an impossible-to-ignore, burning desire to BE what you are called to be, even if you don’t know what that is!  Most people don’t know and some never know, and it doesn’t matter.  Action brings your purpose into focus, and you continuously refine your purpose, focus, and actions over time.  It’s how we grow and make the most of our potential.

Start figuring things out by taking an inventory and analysis of everything you are doing now, to give you insights that can help you confirm your priorities and choose the goals you will tackle.  That is one of several approaches I recommend and teach in the Ambacam group.

Faulty Assumption #2: I don’t have time.

Yes, you do.  The same amount of time I have.  The same amount of time everyone has.  Even accountable people need this reminder: Each day has 24 hours – YOU DECIDE how you spend it.

Do you have a lot on your plate right now?  Are you thinking you’ll work on your dreams once this/that/the other thing happens/is done/etc?

No, you won’t.  There will always be something left on your to-do list that needs to be done.

Do you think it would be selfish of you to carve out focus on YOU when others in your life need your time and attention?

Self care IS other care!  When you take care of yourself, you are a ROLE MODEL.  When you are the rising tide, you lift all the other boats in your life.

The best time to get started is NOW.  From where you are at, RIGHT NOW.  It doesn’t matter if you haven’t done your homework or don’t know where to start.  Just start.
